We are the funky aesthetic.

Simply put: We offer ready-to-hang fine art in hand-restored frames as well as historical museum prints.

Thanks for checking out our shop! Our process is simple and obsessive: we comb open-access museum archives for the highest-resolution artwork, and clean, crop & color-correct so they print crisp and true on fine-art paper.

We rescue vintage and secondhand frames, restore them by hand in our Hudson Valley Studio and pair them with our historic museum prints for pieces that feel intentional, personal, and expensive. Think: collector energy on a beginner budget. Each piece is finished professionally—acid-free matting and backing, D-rings, leveled wire, bumpers—so it arrives truly ready to hang.

Prefer to frame it yourself? We also offer unframed prints with the same careful file prep and cold-press fine art paper quality.

You can also find us at the Brooklyn Flea on select Saturdays. Welcome to our funky little art shop, and thank you for supporting my small business. The Funky Aesthetic is a woman-owned business based in Rockland County, New York.

Because not all of us can spring for originals—but all of us deserve art. Expect affordable, refined pieces that fit seamlessly with your collection—kind on the wallet, no errands, just click-to-hang art.

FAQs

  • Our artwork is sourced from Creative Commons Zero & public-domain museum collections.

  • Creative Commons Zero (CC0) is a public dedication tool that allows artists to relinquish copyright and related rights, effectively placing their work into the public domain. It enables others to freely use, distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the work, even for commercial purposes, without restriction.

In simpler terms? There are hundreds of thousands of professional historical artworks available for free download right now. All of our prints were freely sourced from various Online Museum Collection Archives. Check out our collection here!

  • Excellent question. The image might be free, but our craft isn’t: we've spent hundreds of hours searching open-access museum archives for the highest-resolution files, scaling, cropping, and color-correcting so the final work is crisp and rich when we print it on high quality cold-press fine-art paper.

Our frames are vintage and rescued; we restore each one by hand in our Hudson Valley Studio, ultimately pairing each frame to its perfect print for an intentional, one-of-a-kind look.

Every piece is professionally finished—acid-free matting, new backing, secure hardware, bumpers, leveled wire—so it arrives truly ready to hang, no frame-shop errand required. You’re paying for curation, quality, and convenience (plus sustainability and uniqueness).

  • Definitely. We love collecting original art when we can, and you can find our latest offerings in the shop. All of our pieces are clearly marked as to whether or not it is a print or an original work.

Original art often comes at a higher price point, so stick to our framed & unframed prints if you’re budget conscious.

  • The deal with the frames is that I really love tinkering away in my basement workshop, and professional picture framing & restoration scratches that itch.

We source frames from thrift stores, estate sales & auctions. Each one is restored to it’s original glory-

    • For wood frames, this often requires refinishing the surface, sealing the finish, cutting and/or cleaning glass glazing, gluing and v-nailing mitered corners, and installing new and secure hardwire and hanging wire.

    • For chrome and other metal frames this usually includes, polishing, buffing, replacing stripped and dangerous hardware, cutting and/or cleaning glass glazing, and adding corner bracket supports.

To finish the framing process, we add new acid-free matting, backing, bumpers, and our signature logo stamp to each piece.

We truly appreciate your understanding and support of our small business!

  • Yes! Mostly when we appear at Brooklyn Flea. We do drop collections on the site as well, just on a more fluid schedule.

This small business started as a good old fashioned vintage shop. We honestly struggled with the ethical implications of the reselling business, not wanting to take from those that need or add to an ever-inflated market, and I began struggling to explain the business without turning red.

With this in mind, we pivoted. The first thing we ever sold was a framed San Antonio Poster at the Brooklyn Flea, so artwork has always been special to us. In our pivot we realized that while there is DEFINITELY a growing customer base of interesting young people starting their own art collections, original pieces are more-than-often out of reach budget-wise.

Our solution of restored frames, curated public domain fine art prints, and in-house professional finishing makes collecting art possible for all budgets. Our pieces look just as elegant on the walls of a rental apartment as they do on the walls of a gallery; they can and should share space on the wall with an original.

We all deserve a beautiful life, and professionally framed artwork elevates a mood as much as it does a space.

(Please don’t buy art at Target. You deserve better.)
